D-DAY PRAYER PROJECT

The Effort to Add FDR’s Historical Presidential Prayer at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Legislative History of the D-Day Prayer Project

This legislative initiative first started in early 2011, when OCA President Chris Long approached newly elected Congressman from Ohio’s 6th District, Lt. Colonel Bill Johnson (Air Force, Ret.), to add FDR’s D-Day Landing Prayer in its entirety at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. Congressman Johnson happily agreed. Soon afterwards, Ohio Christian Alliance was approached by Ohio U.S. Senator Rob Portman offering to be the Senate sponsor of the legislation. In a rare bi-partisan moment in the U.S. Congress, and on the eve of the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings, the U.S. Senate granted unanimous consent for S 1044, The WWII Memorial Prayer Act. Two weeks later, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the measure, and sent it on to President Obama, who signed the bill on June 30, 2014.

Construction Completed

Funding Phase

The Ohio Christian Alliance began working with the Friends of the WWII Memorial and the U.S. Parks Service for site selection and design approval, and with the Friends of the WWII Memorial for the project fundraising effort.

Construction and Dedication Phase: D-Day Prayer Now Open to the Public

Final plans were approved by the Commission on Fine Arts. Construction began in July of 2022 and was completed in December of 2022. The dedication ceremony of the D-Day Prayer on Veterans Day at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. was a time to honor all our veterans and give glory to God. The Christian Alliance of America is planning educational tours at the National and War Monuments, with the D-Day Prayer featured, led by historians Bill Federer, David Barton, and other special guests.

"The Christian Alliance of America would like to thank the Lilly Endowment Inc. for their generous grant that will help make the addition of this historical Presidential prayer a reality at the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. We would also like to thank Senator Rob Portman and Congressman Bill Johnson of Ohio’s 6th District, sponsors of the legislation that made the addition of the prayer possible. The prayer’s addition will serve as a lasting tribute to the 16 million Americans who served us in WWII. President Roosevelt’s prayer articulated the great crusade that was underway to liberate millions suffering under tyranny. He addressed the concerns of those who had family members serving in the war effort, and paid honor to the fallen and those veterans who fought courageously in the conflict. It is only fitting that succeeding generations learn of this prayer that was offered at that most poignant moment in our nation’s history."
